Trade Your Sanity for Fun and Prizes in Fantasy Flight’s Call of Cthulhu CCG Leagues
Competitive play for Fantasy Flight’s Call of Cthulhu Living Card Game takes on a new dimension when the league format begins this March. Which jersey number should you give to Nyarlathotep? Whichever one he asks for.
Call of Cthulhu is a collectible card game with a twist on the old “buy booster packs of random cards” collecting model. Instead of random packs, Fantasy Flight periodically (and rather frequently) releases fixed packs of new cards. They call it a Living Card Game, or LCG, and it offers the evolving card set of a traditional CCG while eliminating an aspect many gamers find bothersome. They have a Game of Thrones LCG as well, but I hesitate to play in case it contains spoilers (I’m only halfway through A Storm of Swords). Along with the inherently awesome Lovecraft theme, the Cthulhu LCG has card art that is widely considered among the best ever produced.
The league format runs for six weeks and forces players to choose cards from a limited pool from the core set and a recent expansion – in this case, Asylum packs. Winning games gives players points they can spend to earn game altering special abilities, like playing an extra resource or choosing one of the stories in play. The limited card pool is designed to level the playing field for newer players, and the prizes are prints of the card art, which should look fantastic in a larger size.
The best part is that game stores don’t have to make an enormous commitment or buy $5,000 worth of product to qualify for prize support. Each league kit, including a promotional poster and all the prizes, costs just $15. Players and stores can sign up through Feb. 20, and the league begins on March 5. Head over to Fantasy Flight’s website to find out how to sign up and get involved in some mind-obliterating fun.
