RPG Athenaeum Offers Gamers Food for Thought

March 19th, 2009 by Ed Grabianowski

A new gaming blog debuted this week – the RPG Athenaeum. The man responsible is an old friend, former co-worker, frequent gaming buddy, talented writer and very experienced DM who goes by the name Lorne Marshall. He has some excellent advice for DMs, in-depth product reviews and material that can fit right into your own campaign.

An athenaeum is a place of learning and artistic study, and the RPG Athenaeum fits the bill. In the realm of military science, Lorne explains how to build better encounters and use real-world military tactics to make your monsters fight better (Athena would approve). A particularly innovative section called Crime Scene Sunday takes a crime from our world and places it into the context of a fantasy world. You might call it CSI: Faerûn.

Today, the Athenaeum offers up a nice review of Hot Lead’s DVD series “How To Paint a Better Miniature.” An excerpt:

[Award-winning painter Laszlo] Jakusovszky needed to share supplemental information about how miniatures are manufactured; how a painter can tell if a miniature was cast in a worn-out mold, and how to compensate for that problem; the physical properties, benefits and drawbacks of different types of paints; differences between plastic and metal miniatures; various tools and art supplies that make painting easier; techniques for keeping one’s hands steady; and offering perhaps the best introduction to color theory I’ve ever heard.

There’s a lot of other interesting and useful stuff going on at RPG Athenaeum, so head over and check it out.
