Magic’s October Set Gets a Name: Zendikar
A few weeks ago, savvy Magic fans guessed the name of the upcoming “big” expansion set based on a trademark filing by Wizards of the Coast. Today, it’s official: Zendikar!
Zendikar will contain 249 cards and debut in October of 2009. The codename for the set was “live,” while the other two sets in the block carry the codenames “long” and “prosper.” It will go by the expansion code ZEN, and use the pictured expansion symbol.
The official Wizards announcement has the tagline: “Deadly Perils, Priceless Treasures.” Virtually nothing is known about the set’s content at this point, but that hasn’t stopped speculation from running rampant. I’ve heard suggestions ranging from a pirates-themed set to a revisiting of the Mirage set’s African setting. Personally, I think the tagline suggests an artifact heavy set, and the logo gives off an Aztec vibe (a setting Magic hasn’t really utilized yet).

This is striking me as a bit like Indiana Jones. No idea where the setting is, but I suspect the temple of doom may be involved.
