Monsterpocalypse To Feature Voltron, Defender of the Universe
File this one under: “OMG that’s so freaking awesome!” Collectible miniatures game Monsterpocalypse just announced their first licensed expansion, and it’s Voltron. Giant lion robots battling evil robeasts in a rich tactical game of city-destroying action? Hell yeah.
Privateer Press has been doing some cool world-building based on the original monsters they created for Monsterpocalypse, but a lot of kaiju fans have been asking for licensed monsters. The Voltron license is pretty brilliant. Instead of just one monster, you’ve got an iconic hero force and an assortment of genetically engineered robeasts. Plus, this is the 25th anniversary of Voltron (thanks for making me feel old), and there’s a live-action Voltron movie in the works.
This does lead to some interesting questions. How will they tie the Voltron mythology into the Monsterpocalypse timeline? The current adventures of G.U.A.R.D. do not take place in “days of long ago.” The Galaxy Alliance was based on Earth – maybe Alliance representatives will come to Earth and offer Voltron’s help defending against “a new horrible menace.” One also wonders if we’ll just get the lion Voltron (which is specifically mentioned in the official press release), or if the vehicle Voltron will be along too. The Galaxy Alliance faction will need two robots, so I’m guessing both.
The Voltron set will release sometime in early 2010.

Speaking as someone who arrived late to Voltron and thought it was awesome how it was in CG. Yea, I showed up that late.

Wow, I forgot the rest of my comment, but that is awesome for the Monsterpacalypse folks. Big name brand among the target audience will bring in more players, and more players means more for everyone.

NO WAY! … ok sorry for yelling but that is just awesome. I just got hooked on Monsterpocalypse and being an old school Voltron fan I have been scowering the Web to try & find minis that I could use to perhaps create my own Voltron faction (None small enough that I have found). I just said to my brother “It would be great if they would make a Voltron set but there’s no way they will get licensing to do so.”
I’ve never been so happy to be proven completely wrong.
