Try 4th Edition D&D for Free with D&D Test Drive
Switching to a new RPG system can be tough, especially when you have to plunk down a chunk of change for new rulebooks. If you’ve been holding out on trying 4th Edition D&D for this very reason, hold out no longer. Wizards of the Coast has introduced “D&D Test Drive,” a way for anyone to check out the system for free, including the first published 4E adventure, Keep On the Shadowfell.
I’m a 4E convert, myself (despite early skepticism). But there are edition loyalists, gamers with tight budgets, or people who just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Now you have no excuse. Head over to D&D Test Drive and download the Quick Start Rules, the free version of the Character Creator, and a pdf copy of Keep On the Shadowfell. You can use pregenerated characters or roll your own. Either way, you can try out new feats, classes, powers and magic items, all for the cost of…nothing.
Although the rules and character creator provided have built-in level limits, it’s enough to get you through the Keep On the Shadowfell module, which is a fun dungeon crawl long enough to last several gaming sessions. And if you enjoy it (I tend to think you will), then you can pick up the Player’s Handbook, DM’s Guide and Monster Manual knowing there are countless adventures to come.
If you’re already a 4E player, Test Drive is a great way to introduce new players to the game. They can read the Quick Start rules and start making their own characters right off the bat. I applaud anything that makes it easier to get new people interested in gaming (make sure they bookmark Robot Viking for daily reading, too).

I sent the link to my friend, whose son has expressed interest to her about getting into DnD.
