Magic 2010 Preview: Drowned Catacomb

June 24th, 2009 by Ed Grabianowski
Good thing I brought Yawgmoth's scuba gear.

Good thing I maindeck four copies of Phyrexian Scuba Gear.

We’ve got five cards to preview from this summer’s new Magic: the Gathering core set, Magic 2010. Let’s kick things off by answering a hotly debated question: what kind of dual lands will we get?

Drowned Catacomb is a dual land with the slightest of drawbacks. It doesn’t ping you for damage when you use it, it doesn’t required convoluted mana manipulation, and it usually won’t slow you down. The “comes into play tapped” hindrance will only affect you in two situations. The first is if you’ve used it to splash both of the colors it produces into your deck without running the basic lands of those colors. In that case, it’ll take one extra turn to get into action.

The other situation is when you have it in your opening hand with no other lands to play, but then you probably should have mulliganed anyway.

Of course, this still leaves us with a few unanswered questions. Will we be getting a basic cycle of these dual lands, covering only the allied color combinations (R/G, B/U, G/W, W/U, R/B)? Or will the odder color combos be represented too? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Keep your eye on Robot Viking throughout the day as we debut four more cards from Magic 2010, including some familiar faces and some amazing new cards.
