Garruk, my man! You been working out, dude? You are looking seriously mythic these days bro!

Our second Magic 2010 preview of the day is one of Lorwyn’s mighty planeswalkers. An Argothian Elder, Call of the Herd and Overrun all in one card? I don’t know, I guess some people might find a use for him…

We’ve known for a while now that the first planeswalkers would be included in Magic 2010, so seeing Garruk isn’t a huge surprise. He does look pretty spiffy with his new mythic rare expansion symbol.

I like that planeswalkers will be in the core set. People like them. It’s fun getting one in a pack, but they’re not just Timmy cards – most of them see steady use in tournament decks.

    Timmy?

    Timmy = the type of Magic player who loves big, awesome creatures even if they cost a ton or are strategically inferior.

    There’s an article on the Wizards site somewhere in which they explain the three types of Magic player they have to cater to. I think the hardcore tournament player is “Spike,” and there’s also a Johnny, but I can’t remember what Johnny’s deal is.

    I think I might be Timmyish– In strategy games I have a distinct preference for small, elite units.

    Ut! Found the article;

    JOhnny is the crazy one who tries the insane combos. I’m a poor Timmy-Johnny. I know enough to see which cards really shouldn’t be played without a good idea behind them, then I find a flimsy pretext to play them.

    So how rare is Mythic Rare? 1 of 25 rares is a Mythic Rare? More Rare?

    Rare enough I’ll never see one. It varies by set but I think it’s closer to 10-15 with certainly not more than twenty. I’d have to look at the numbers, but I don’t approve of the change. I get my ass kicked by playsets of rares all the time. I don’t want to battle cards one guy in the town has.

    Yeah. One of the reasons I stopped playing Magic: Getting my butt handed to me by rare cards.

    I’d still buy some of these individually just for the art though. I love me some Magic art, see Serra Angel post.

    I guess I am out of the loop a little. What do the +1, -1. -4 on the left side mean?

    New card type. they’re planeswalkers. the numbers keep track of loyalty which is what you spend to use their abilities, and it also acts as life.
