The Origins Report

June 25th, 2009 by Ed Grabianowski

Well, here I am at Origins. There are lots of games. I am going to play as many of them as humanly possible in the next three days.

I haven’t been able to post before because Internet access at the con has been…well, non-existent. I had to wait to use the free Wi-Fi at the hotel. I’ve taken a bunch of photos, but can’t show them to you for lack of the proper USB cord to upload them from my camera. Hopefully, both of these situations will improve tomorrow and I’ll be able to post live from the con.

I’ve already seen a bunch of cool stuff, including a linked network of 12 BattleTech simulator pods – life-size cockpits you climb into to pilot a ‘Mech against 11 other people. There’s a cool new version of the D&D Dungeon Delve (ULTIMATE DELVE!), some excelent new releases in the board and card game worlds, and a lot of crazy, fun and weird one-of-a-kind events. I’ll be reporting on all these things in as much depth as possible.

On top of that, I’ll be bringing home some new games to review. Better yet, I’ll be plundering the treasure trove of out-of-print games available for cheap. Ever wonder if the Buffy CCG was any good? For $2 per starter deck, why not?

So far, I’ve had my butt more or less handed to me in the Magic: the Gathering Convention League. The Warrior Deck (which has been slightly modified form its original form to include three Bloodbraid Elves and a Sarkhan Vol) has been suffering from terrible land draws, and stands at 1-2. On the other hand, my wins-to-money-spent-on-the-deck ratio is pretty awesome (when the kid beating me said, “I put about $250 into this deck,” I just smiled and nodded).

Finally, to the guy who was wearing nothing but a chain mail loincloth: no. Just no.

Buying cheap card games, yes. Chainmail against the skin, NO! I bought out my game shop’s supply of Gundam Wing cards for $0.50 a pack. Good times.

If I had a dollar every time I heard that…

12 linked Battle tech simulators? Is there a drooling emoticon?

I also smiled at the wins to money ratio thing. Way to realize that it’s the joy of playing, not the need to spend until you can win.

So did you or are you going to do the Mech simulator?

I’ll pass on pics of “Chain Mail Dude.” I’ll take all the info available on the Battletech stuff though. I’ve always wanted to try the simulator pods. CGL also announced this week the return of the Unseen mechs. Much awesome-ness!

We can’t let the Ghost Bears acquire this new technology! Destroy all photographs and may the peace of Blake be with you.

A Blakist?! Or do you prefer Wobbie? We will crush you, newtech or not!
