Breaking News: Wizkids Lives Again!
The company that revolutionized tabletop miniatures gaming has been resurrected, according to an official announcement made today. What will the future hold for superheroes, horror monsters and fantasy creatures mounted on clicky bases?
You can read the full official press release for all the gory details. The brass tacks of the matter is that a company called the National Entertainment Collectibles Association purchased most of Wizkids’ intellectual property from Topps (Mechwarrior was notably excluded). NECA will form a subsidiary company that will operate under the name Wizkids. Not only do they own the name, they also own the games, the click base concept and even the polystyrene 3D game model used for Pirates and other games.
Word on what exactly NECA will do with all these properties is slim, but they come right out and say in the press release that they’ll continue putting out Marvel and DC licensed HeroClix. My checking account is somewhat dismayed at this news.
What’s particularly interesting is the fact that HeroClix will now be going head-to-head with Upper Deck’s own Marvel-licensed minis game. In the span of a few months, we will go from having no superhero collectible minis games in the world to two (possibly three, as Upper Deck has suggested they will make a separate game geared to younger players).

I’m excited to see that Mike Elliott is being brought in to work on the transition. I think he is an excellent game designer.

It’s a pipe dream, but I’d love to see someone produce further expansions for the Crimson Skies clix game again.
