Magical Christmas Land
There’s a lot of cool stuff going on with Magic: the Gathering these days. If you’re looking to drop a few gift-related hints to friends and family who might be doing a little holiday shopping this week, here are a few ideas.
In case you’re wondering, there’s a fairly successful (though not terribly consistent) Standard-legal Magic deck in use these days that actually goes by the name “Magical Christmas Land.” The deck is sometimes capable, via Lotus Cobra, of setting off huge and devastating effects as early as turn 3. The deck’s name comes from the mythical place where such things ever actually happen.
Far easier than pulling off a ridiculous combo is getting your hands on the new(ish) premium deck, Slivers. Slivers are weird hive-mind creatures that grant their own abilities to others of their kind. Robot Viking recently acquired one of these decks, and it’s really a spectacular item. The entire deck is foil, even the lands. Every single card a foil, and a lot of those slivers have never appeared in foil before. The deck comes in a plastic deck case that is also foil, and it comes with a D20 with a sliver symbol for the 20. It’s a spin-down die (all the high numbers are on one side), which is a little odd — why is the world’s leading proliferator of D20-based games sending out dice that are often considered “cheaters”? Not sure, but the Slivers premium deck is swanky.
If you’re a fan of blue decks, you’ve not been happy in the Standard format lately. Blue is widely considered the weakest color after Zendikar’s release. Well, Merry Christmas, blue mages, because it looks like that’s about to change. Check out Jace, the Mind Sculptor, a new Planeswalker card from February’s Worldwake expansion. Now that players are used to Planewalkers and the concept has matured a bit, the designers are starting to stretch the possibilities of the card type. The way the card was released was pretty cool, too — Wizards hid eight pieces of the card in eight different game stores around the world, posting only the latitude and longitude of the store. People had to find them and piece together the card to find out what it was and what it could do.
If you still need gift ideas, you could always send someone you love a Baneslayer Angel or a Tarmogoyf. On the other hand, a nice shiny copy of Season’s Beatings might be in order.
You can order the Premium Slivers deck from TrollandToad.com.
