Monsterpocalypse Voltron Update

Whatever happened to the Voltron Monsterpocalypse set that was supposed to come out in early 2010? Robot Viking dug deep to find out. This is serious investigative journalism, people!

Way back in April we told you that Privateer Press had licensed Voltron so the giant universe defending robot could appear in a Monsterpocalypse expansion. The Voltronpocalypse was set for an early 2010 release, but we’ve heard pretty much nothing about it since then.

Turns out things are just a little behind schedule. Sculptor Ben Misenar reported last month in an interview with Breakdancing Robot (no relation to the Robot Viking) that he had completed all the Voltron sculpts. You may be familiar with Ben’s work, by the way — he’s known for many fan-favorite HeroClix sculpts, and created a large percentage of the figures for the Hammer of Thor HeroClix set.

Originally, Voltron was going to come out in between sets four and five, but it’s been bumped back behind set five (Big in Japan). According to a Privateer rep on the MonPoc forums, it’s just a matter of the figures being produced overseas and shipped to the U.S. We should have them in our hands later this year.

Speaking of Big in Japan, previews for that set are already trickling out. Official MonPoc blog Monster Insider has concept sketches of a few units, plus some elemental-powered monsters.

Semi-random aside — I just noticed the somewhat bizarre fact that a Google search for “Big in Japan Monsterpocalypse” brings up Robot Viking ahead of the official Monsterpocalypse website. Huh.
