Project: Death Race Needs a Kickstart

January 27th, 2010 by Ed Grabianowski

Project: Death Race has been stalled for months now simply because I haven’t had the time to dedicate to revising, testing, rerevising and retesting the rules to push them toward a completed form. So we’re going to try something a little different: a funding drive! Well, we couldn’t really have a bake sale…

If you’re not familiar with Project: Death Race, it’s a Robot Viking original game that allows the players to create custom cars outfitted with weapons, armor and other devices, then have arena battles against other players using 1/64 scale cars (your basic Hot Wheels size cars). We made it through two alpha revisions of the rules before interest seemed to dwindle and my day job prevented me from spending much time on it.

Arc Dreams’ use of Kickstarter.com to “ransom” their RPG titles and raise funds for publication inspired me. Why not try it with Project: Death Race? At worst, the fund drive fails and the game isn’t any farther from completion than it is now. Here’s how it works:

Head over to the Project: Death Race Kickstarter page. There, you’ll see that the funding goal for this stage of the project is $300. The minimum amount you can pledge is $1, and at $5 and up you get some extra perks. You’re basically pre-funding the development of the game. I’ll have a banner ad linked to the project page up shortly, which should stay updated with the current funding level.

Now, $300 is not going to get us to a complete, publishable Project: Death Race, but it will get us over a major hump and a lot closer to a finished game. There’ll probably be another funding stage down the line, mainly because I’d really like to commission an artist.

Part of me feels like it’s greedy to ask people to pay out for a game that isn’t complete yet, but if the funding fails, no one pays anything. $300 isn’t a huge amount, and the deadline is over two months away. If we go over the funding level (now I’m being really greedy), any extra will be funneled right back into Project: Death Race. This is an experiment. It could crash and burn. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Vikings, are you with me?
