Frank Frazetta Dead at Age 82
Fantasy artist extraordinaire Frank Frazetta died today, according to a report by the New York Times. His lush style virtually defined the sword and sorcery genre and brought to life the works of Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock and many others.
Frazetta’s body of work is certainly deserving of the term “iconic.” You can see one of his paintings and immediately know it’s a Frazetta. Amidst the bizarre aliens and barbaric heroes (not to mention barely-clothed princesses and nubile warrior-women), there’s a certain realism and earthiness. The fantastic elements contrast with people who, though they appear exceptionally strong and/or sensuous, maintain their humanity. And really, among all fantasy artists, Frazetta’s women are quite simply the sexiest.
This New York Times article explains his death (of a stroke). This site has a nice overview of his life and career, with a gallery of his art. Thank you, Mr. Frazetta. Odin awaits you.

Oh wow. Sad news.
For fantasy fanatics who, like myself, cannot manage a straight line with a ruler, Frazetta brought so many heroes and villains to life with his art. He will be missed.

To me he made John Carter’s Mars. Barsoom does not exist without him.
