Duels of the Planeswalkers Expansions Brings New Decks, Puzzles and Unlockable Cards

Fire up your Xbox 360 — a new Duels of the Planeswalkers expansion comes out today. Challenge Rhys the Redeemed, play with Nicol Bolas’ “Eons of Evil” deck or try one of the five new puzzles.

If you recall from my original review of Duels of the Planeswalkers, it’s a fun, lightweight take on playing Magic that definitely is worth the price. You’re sure to get many hours of fun playing against random people on Xbox Live, or just playing against the computer to unlock all the cards and achievements. Each expansion adds a little more to explore and achieve.

This expansion adds the aforementioned five puzzles, plus three new playable decks and three new unlockable cards for each of the original decks. You can earn three new Xbox achievements, and, fixing a major flaw with multi-player online play, the game now has host migration. That means that if the hosting player quits, the game doesn’t end for everyone else (and before everyone asks, no, you still can’t build your own decks).

Another interesting addition: avatar attire rewards. I had no idea what this meant at first, so I checked the FAQ.

Avatar attire awards are items you can earn to customize your Xbox Live avatar. After you unlock all of the cards in 3 decks you earn a Planeswalker T-shirt. After you unlock all of the cards in 6 decks you earn a Magic: The Gathering deck for your avatar.

Coinciding with the expansion’s release, this Friday you can play against the Frag Dolls to see who is a better wizard.

Now I just have to decide which would make a better name for a metal band: Eons of Evil or A Better Wizard.

  1. I haven’t played Duels of the Planeswalkers in months but I was surprised how excited I got when I saw this release. I can’t wait to have time to spend with the game again. I wish there were more puzzles than the five because they are my favorite part of the game.

As for band names I agree with GGodo… A Better Wizard and the Eons of Evil.
