Off to See the Wizards

June 7th, 2010 by Ed Grabianowski

I’ll be heading for the airport in a few minutes, on my way to the Community Cup 2010 at Wizards of the Coast HQ. Along with the rest of the community team, I’ll be going toe-to-toe against the official Wizards team. We’re definitely the underdogs.

This seems like a good time to start the good-natured trash talking. One way to boost morale…make your team feel like the underdogs, like you have something to prove, and nothing to lose. Of course, it’s not much of a stretch.

First, check out the Wizards team. Notice how each team member is only participating in a single event? They’ve had all this time to work solely on that event. The nine community team members have had to prepare for all four events. It’s been difficult. Some of us have spent a lot of time working on Commander decks, some of us have Standard experience that we can make use of. Practicing for the limited events has been…well, limited. One might imagine that those Wizards employees have had some “on-the-clock” time at work practicing Eldrazi sealed and Mirrodin drafts, a luxury our team doesn’t really have.

It gets worse, though. Wizards has been very tight-lipped about the new sealed format — in fact, I’m not sure if I can reveal what it is yet. I found out, but not officially. One can well imagine that Wizards knew what the format would be for quite some time, giving them a major advantage. Major because the format will require some strange deck building and mana base decisions very foreign to pretty much anyone with any experience in Magic limited deck construction. A few weeks of practice could really give one team an edge.

Plus, they won’t have the fatigue of cross-country travel affecting their play!

Ok, like I said, this is all good-natured trash talk. Wizards has been first class all the way. They’re giving the community team the V.I.P treatment, taking us on a tour of Seattle along with all sorts of other cool events. I’ll have lots of photos are updates as the week rolls on. Now, off to the airport.
