Play Magic, Help Sick Kids — Wizards to Donate Up to $20,000 to Child’s Play
Wizards of the Coast plans to donate as much as $20,000 to the Child’s Play charity, which provides games, toys and books to sick kids stuck in hospitals. You can help make it happen just by playing Magic this weekend.
While last weekend was the prerelease for Magic’s new M11 core set, this weekend is the official launch party weekend. Stores around the world will be holding sealed tournaments just like on the prerelease, with one difference — the set is officially available for sale.
If you go to a launch party (you can find a participating store near you with the Wizards store locator), not only will you get six packs of M11, a special foil rare (Ancient Hellkite, four rounds of fun play, and possibly other prizes, but you’ll also contribute to the overall attendance numbers upon which Wizards’ Child’s Play donation will be based.
If launch party attendance hits 40,000, Wizards will donate $11,000 to Child’s Play. For each 1,000 attendees beyond that, they’ll donate an extra $1,100, up to $22,000. We’ll need 50,000 launch party players to hit that level. Note that while Child’s Play focuses their efforts on North America, Wizards will be counting attendance worldwide.
So what is Child’s Play? It’s a charity founded by Penny Arcade creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik. Now, I was excited when I first heard of this charity, because I figured they were raising funds to get Chucky a new body, or at least fund the production of a new Child’s Play movie, but it turns out they actually raise gigajillions of dollars to make the lives of sick kids in hospitals more bearable with games and toys. And on further reflection, that is probably a lot cooler than another movie about a homicidal doll.
