Robot Viking to Storm the Shores of Gen Con

I’ve never been to Gen Con. It’s true. I know this takes away some of my gamer cred, but Origins is closer, and I’ve never been able to do both in the same year. But I skipped Origins this year and threw together a bare bones trip to Gen Con to see what the fuss is all about, and find out the latest and coolest gaming news while I’m there.

This is going to be a quick assault on Gen Con, a two-day blitz of the exhibitor’s hall, where I plan to demo as many new games, learn about as many upcoming releases, and talk to as many game designers as humanly possible. And then, because I’m a Robot Viking and not a human, I’ll demo, learn and talk even more! And if things get a little insane on the front lines, if my axe is growing dull, there’s no need to worry. I’m bringing backup. My dad!

Yeah, he’s an old-school wargamer. In fact, he introduced me to gaming when I was very young with some of the simpler hexmap wargames like Gettysburg and Waterloo.

Normally, I’d approach a sortie like this with a detailed battle plan, with scheduled deployments and to-the-minute precision. We’ll be well-provisioned, but we’re going to fly this one by the seats of our pants. No plan. No schedule. There are a lot of games out there, and a writer has to be able to adapt to shifting battlefield conditions. Still, we’re not against taking advice from veterans of prior engagements. So if anyone out there has experience with Gen Con, please use the comments to give us any tips you have. Where’s the best place to park? Best place near the con to eat? Trickiest place in the convention center to find?

I should point out that we’re not totally winging it. Rumor has it I’ll be interviewing some D&D and Magic developers, and playing a Dark Sun session run by one of them. I’ll keep you guys posted with updates from the field.

    I want to go see the shiny new Player’s guide for Pathfinder!
