Happy New Year, Vikings!
With the turn of another calendar page, 2010 slips into the past and we start another year. Robot Viking has been around for two years now!
In those two years, Robot Viking has accrued almost 500 articles, most of them written by me, but quite a few by some truly awesome contributing writers. We have over 1,100 registered users on the site, and even discounting 75 percent of those as spam, there’s still a couple of hundred people who cared enough about something they read here to register. And those registered users have contributed over 2,400 comments, not a single one of them a trash-talking insult or blatant troll attempt (except in those cases where we were specifically talking about trolls, the regenerating kind). Often the discussions in the comments are at least as interesting as the articles themselves.
I’ve always been very proud of the community that’s developed here. It’s small, but dedicated and of exceedingly high quality. We have a core of regular commenters — you folks know who you are, and Robot Viking wouldn’t be the same without you. All our readers are Vikings, but you lot stand at the helms of the longships when we set out to plunder and pillage. I can not overstate how much I appreciate trading ideas with you and hearing about your various tabletop adventures. If that was the only thing I got out of the last two years of working on this site, it would still have been worth it.
As we move in to 2011 and Robot Viking’s third year, I don’t have any grandiose plans, major announcements or visions of world conquest (well, I always have visions of world conquest, I’m just choosing not to act on them for now). I plan to keep doing the things I’ve been doing with Robot Viking, only better. There were many changes in the gaming world in 2010, so we can only hang on for the ride and see what happens this year.
One thing that won’t change — we’ll all keep on playing games and having fun. In the coming year, I hope you play many a game (and win a few), make many a friend, win with grace, lose with wisdom, explore many a new world and above all enjoy yourself. Happy New Year!
