Brazer Bulletin — Inspirational Reading

March 23rd, 2011 by Dale McCoy

As a publisher, I don’t have a lot of time. Much of my available time is taken up with writing new material. But I always make sure to take the time to read other material.

Every night I read a chapter in a book to my girlfriend. Currently we’re on Dresden Files: Dead Beat. We’re both big fans of Jim Butcher’s writing s and I’m hoping that we get to play a game of the Dresden Files RPG by Evil Hat. If you’ve never met the Evil Hat crew, they’re some of the most fun gamers I have had to privilege of meeting, and the Dresden Files RPG is the first FATE game that I have wanted to play longer than a 1 shot game.

More relevant to the Pathfinder RPG, I’ve been reading Open Design’s Imperial Gazetteer, specifically the section on the Ghoul Imperium. My current Kingmaker game is the first game I’ve run without a significant presence of undead. Oh, but how I want to put the Ghoul Imperium right underneath my players’ feet. I have considered replacing the final chapter with an undead nation underground and the guys at Open Design did a wonderful job of making that decision that much more tempting. I would have a ball doing this, even if my players would not.

I am also rereading the Universe of Babylon 5 book by Mongoose Publishing from their Traveller line. My company publishes for Traveller as well — I prefer Babylon 5 to the 3rd Imperium setting. Just my own personal preference. Shadows lurking about, Drazi being hard heads, Teeps cheating at gambling. You know how it goes. Also seeing how Mongoose put together an alternate setting book for the Traveller system is helpful for me to develop my own setting.

So what are you reading?

I once ran a Chrononauts themed game of Timestream and in preperation for that, I drew a lot of inspiration from Robert Silverberg’s “Up the Line”, which is a great book if you’re looking to get ideas for anything to do with time travel.

I’m currently mulling over different aspects of Alastair Reynolds’ Revelation Space books to get ideas for a grand space opera campaign of D20 Future.

D20 supplements – Kingdom Building, the Pathfinder core book (*still* discovering the changes from 3.5!), D20 Modern SRD, Infinite Futures, Modern Path, several SGG books, and so on. Yes, I’m trying to make the leap from “Player” to “Designer.”

…I’m still not too sure about “Publisher,” though…
