Crash Test Magic — Fatewar, the Robot Viking Designed Hypothetical Magic Set

April 28th, 2011 by Ed Grabianowski

Some months ago, we started work here on a “pretend” Magic set. Work on the unnamed set stalled for a while, but now it has a name and I think it’s time to get back to work.

There are two documents that will get you up to speed on the design process. First is the Fatewar Design Guide, which explains the overall themes and mechanics of the set.

The other is the Fatewar Card Database, where all the card designs will be stored. There are different sheets in the tabs at the bottom of the document for each different color. You can check that document and see what cards have been added and read comments on the cards.

For now, I’m not enabling editing access to either document for anyone but me, so they’re read only. If you have card ideas and suggestions, post them here in the comments thread, and I’ll add them to the DB or make changes as we hash things over.I may allow direct access to some people in the future, but this is simpler for now.

The two things we really need most are commons and some ideas for an expansion symbol. So read the Design Guide and then start throwing out your common card ideas. Remember, common cards need to express the themes of the set, yet be relatively simple cards. Feel free to suggest a few reprints of existing Magic cards to include in the set as well.

    More like Angel of Elfdeath.

I love all the fun interactions Angel of the Void has.

I would like to say that Aeon Chamber is awesome! I’ll think on this sometime tomorrow, though. It’s late and nearly finals.

    Aku Djinn. Lol.

Also, black’s goes to graveyard ability scares me. Everything’s a sprouting thrinax? Yikes.

Last edit: did we ever come to a consensus on whether Supply tutored out land types or just a specific basic?

Aeon Chamber came from me misreading Force Bubble, thinking it was awesome, realizing it was only ok, then deciding to just make an awesome version.

zizhou: well, not every black creature will have that ability, plus you’ll only get a single token, not three. We can cost those cards appropriately to make them less scary. I do like how it captures the feeling of fighting a relentless horde of zombies that just won’t die.

I’m not sure what you mean about land types vs. specific basics. As of now, green creatures get forests, red ones get mountains, etc. Am I forgetting something?

I think zizhou is referring to how, the original dual lands and the Ravinica dual lands are tracked as two types of the basis land types, ie Scrubland is a Land – Plains Swamp and Watery Grave is a Land – Island Swamp. Effects which can search for land types listed on the duals, such as fecthlands, will find them, while effects that only search for basic lands, such as the Panoramas from Shards, can’t find these duals.

In that case, as currently constructed, Supply finds land types (Forest, Island, etc) so it will grab old school and Rav duals.

Which will make Supply creatures nice in Commander, for instance.
