New Innistrad Details Emerge from San Diego Comic Con

July 22nd, 2011 by Ed Grabianowski

This fall’s Magic set, Innistrad, is far too many months away. Magic’s R&D team is sharing choice bits of information on the set at SDCC this weekend to get us hyped up. It’s working!  Here are some updates, including the name of the second set in the block and what tribes will be featured.

Innistrad will have a gothic horror theme, or as Mark Rosewater described it, “classic horror.” While specific new mechanics weren’t revealed (yet), they will involve the graveyard as well as creature types. And what creature types will be featured? Zombies, of course, but apparently werewolves will be major players in this set. That’s a fun surprise. Also, while these tribes are typically black, they’ll be spreading out into the other colors, with blue zombies and red vampires. Werewolves are red and green. Liliana will definitely be in the set, along with one other planeswalker.

The second set, released in February of 2012, will be called Dark Ascension, with the tagline, “Control the Night.”

With all that in mind, and recalling that Richard Garfield was on the design team for this set (his first since the beloved Ravnica), all I can say is, “Yes, please.” For all that I didn’t care for Scars block, I am head over heels excited for Innistrad.

[Update: Confirmed card name -- Creepy Doll. Someone won the original art just for asking a question at the Magic panel's Q&A session. Other prizes included Arabian Nights booster (Library of Alexandria as the rare), Beta booster, Italian Legends box.]

I’m still pulling for a return to Ravnica!

Mark Rosewater also said in the Q&A that Ravnica is definitely on the list of places they want to revisit.

AWESOME! In other news, I’m headed to PAX this year. If there’s anything you’d like me to check out while I’m there, let me know.
