Deep Magic Pathfinder Preview Spell: Fire under the Tongue

Deep Magic CoverKobold Press is putting together a book packed with magic for Pathfinder. New spells, schools of magic, types of spellcasting, and more. To show off the creative spells they’ve developed, here’s a preview of a 1st level spell called Fire under the Tongue.

Deep Magic has all the big names in Pathfinder contributing, and even Ed Greenwood is along for the ride. Some of the new magical styles include leyline magic, shieldmaiden magic, tomb magic, and fool’s summonings, a sort of “sacrifice yourself for greater power” angle that I’m pretty interested in. The Kickstarter is already a big success, with stretch goals making a cool book even cooler. I’ll have a better writeup and an interview with the design & development team at io9 later this week, but for now, here’s your preview spell:

Fire under the Tongue

School transmutation; Level druid 1, ranger 1, witch 1

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V

Range 5 ft.

Target one non-magical fire of campfire size of smaller

Duration 24 hrs.

Saving throw see below; Spell Resistance no

You have mastered the art of keeping fire under your tongue. As a standard action, you may consume a non-magical fire that is the size of a typical campfire or smaller. The fire is stored harmlessly in your mouth and dissipates if it is not used before the end of the spell’s duration.

You can vomit forth the stored fire as a standard action. If you’re trying to hit a particular target, treat this as a ranged touch attack with a range of 5 ft. Campfire-sized flames cause 1d4 hp fire damage, while torch-sized flames inflict 1 hp fire damage. Once out of your mouth, the fire burns normally, dying immediately unless it hits appropriate combustible materials.

Mythic: You can vomit forth the fire as a swift action. If you’re trying to hit a particular target, treat it as a ranged touch attack with a range of 20 ft. Campfire-sized flames deal 1d6 hp fire damage, while torchsized flames deal 1d4 hp fire damage.

Greater: If you are at least a second-tier mythic character, you can expend two uses of mythic power to have this fire damage ignore resistance to fire of 10 or less.
